Platonic attraction is a form of attraction that is defined as the desire to form a platonic relationship (friendship) with a specific individual, or to form a closer friendship with someone one already knows. The type of friendship desired may go beyond casual friendship and revolve around a willingness to engage in a very deep symbiotic friendship, as well as sharing interests and experiences. Some individuals only use the term platonic attraction when the desired friendship is close and intimate, while others include casual or otherwise less intense friendships in this attraction. Platonic attraction is not "a desire to have friends" in general, rather it is a desire to be friends with someone specific. One might feel intimidated or flustered when around this specific individual, like one could with a romantic crush.
Platonic attraction is sometimes used as an umbrella term for any attraction that is not romantic or sexual. Platonic attraction can be considered a parent category or overlapping category with queerplatonic attraction. For some individuals these two forms of attraction are different and can be distinguished, for other individuals these types of attraction can overlap and they do not make any distinction between them.
The term for a platonic crush is a squish. Platonic attraction is often associated with the color yellow, coming from the fact that yellow roses symbolize friendship. Someone who regularly feels platonic attraction would be alloplatonic. individuals who do not get squishes/feel platonic attraction might call themselves aplatonic.
The platonic attraction flag was coined by Weniviere from Cryptocrew on November 25th, 2020. The pink stands for bonding and attraction, and the yellow flower represents the yellow roses often associated with platonic bonds.
The alternative platonic attraction flag was made by an anonymous Reddit user on January 23th, 2021. The orange stands for joy, the pink for tenderness, the yellow for friendship, and the white for unity.
